Since bottling this wine in 2012 after 2 years in a new Francois Freres hogshead barrel we are super excited to announce the inaugural release of our first single vineyard survivor vineyard wine, “The Forgotten Hero” Shiraz.

We love this vineyard and think you’ll love the wine, it’s big, complex and will cellar for over a decade, and is drinking great now given a chance to breath with decanting.

Many old vineyards throughout the valley were destroyed during the governments vine-pull scheme in the 1980’s, many growers took up the payment offered to push out some magnificent vineyards in the Barossa during those challenging years. Atze’s Corner grape growers John and Barb have always been in the wine industry for the long haul, and saw this vineyards potential for long term significance to theirs and the Barossa’s grape growing future. This vineyard almost became a forgotten hero all those years ago it now shines through in this single vineyard ultra limited release wine. It is a testament to John and Barbs long term involvement in the Barossa Valley Wine industry which dates back to 1842 when Johns ancestors first settled in Greenock on  the Barossa Valley’s Western Ridge.

At 60 years of age these vines are survivors which have endured climatic, market and viticultural pressures and now offer you great fruit which will reward more than a decade of careful cellaring. The Forgotten Hero is only produced in the best vintages, 2010 will go down as one of the best, producing big and robust reds which will rarely be surpassed.

Limited in production to 33 cases, this wine will be hard to come by in years to come, to secure yours please get in early, and avoid disappointment.

A charming and characterful old vine Shiraz showing the hallmarks of old vine character, complexity, tight tannin and refinement. Complex aromatics of dark fruit, spice and cocoa with a powerful and polished palate, lend this wine to partnering with full flavoured red meat dishes, roasts and beef casseroles.
